Itinerary
Day 1: DAY-1-SINGAPORE-SAPPORO
Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport for your flight to Hokkaido via Narita. Upon arrival, visit famous Susukino Ramen Alley, which has over 10 established ramen restaurants that serve ramen in a miso-flavoured soup, a Hokkaido specialty. Overnight in Sapporo.

Day 2: DAY-2-SAPPORO-FURANO-BIEI-ASAHIKAWA-SOUNKYO
Visit Sapporo’s landmark Odori Park decorated with fountains, sculptures and flowerbeds. Next, proceed to Tokeidai (clock tower), the symbol of Sapporo which has been designated as an important cultural property and houses a small museum. Stroll through the beautiful Farm Tomita among vast beds of seasonal blooms at Furano. Drive past Biei, a picturesque farmland. Next, visit Asahiyama Zoo to view Hokkaido native animals. It also houses the most polar animals in the world in their most natural habitat. During winter, you can catch the king penguin parade. Overnight in Sounkyo.

Day 3: DAY-3-SOUNKYO-MT-DAIZETSU-SAN-ABASHIRI-MOMBETSU
Proceed to Sounkyo Gorges, situated at the foot of Mt Daisetsu-zan. You can choose to ascend the magnificent mountain via a ropeway at your own expense to have a panoramic view of its surrounding landscape. The mountain is accented by dramatic columnar cliffs that are lined with waterfalls such as Shooting Star Falls and Silver River Falls, both magnificent and not to be missed sights. On the way to Abashiri, pass by the deep valley of Oobako and drive along Kamiyubetsu which is famous for its tulips gardens during early spring. Visit Okhotsk Tower, the first observation tower in the world to see the mystery of drift ice in a minus 20-degree environment. You can even catch a glimpse of the mysterious creature, “sea fairy” and try blowing “ice bubble”. Next, visit the Okhotsk Seal Centre, a conservation centre where rare sea seals are protected and studied. Enjoy the seasonal bonus.* Overnight at Mombetsu, where you can learn the traditional art of making glutinous rice cake.

Day 4: DAY-4-MOMBETSU-ABASHIRI-SHIRETOKO-NATIONAL-PARK-UTORO
Behold a natural phenomenon in Hokkaido, where the changing colour of glassworts can be seen only around the shores of Lake Notori, Lake Saroma and Lake Akkeshi. The green stems of these rare plants will turn red in autumn, creating a spectacular scene of “cardinal red carpet.” Visit Abashiri Prison built in 1890s to hold more than 1,000 dangerous criminals. Proceed to its museum that documents the daily life of prisoners and exhibits more than a dozen buildings and structures of the old prison. Drive past Lake Koshimizu to view seasonal blooms. Explore Shiretoko National Park, a well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a variety of floral, fauna and wildlife. Continue to view one of Shiretoko’s great water falls, the Oshinkoshin Falls.

Day 5: DAY-5-UTORO-AKAN-NATIONAL-PARK-AKANKOHAN-LAKE-AKAN
View the enchanting Lake Masshu, a beautiful crater lake in Akan National Park known for its clear, deep blue water and its mysticism when shrouded by fog. Continue to Lake Akan, a unique crater lake in the park that is home to marimo, a very rare algae species, which turn into beautiful “green balls”. If left untouched for a few centuries, the marimo may reach the size of soccer balls. The algae has been designated a National Special Natural Monument. Next, proceed to view Onneto Falls that starts from a precipice 50 metres above. The manganese oxide content in the water has caused the surface of the rocks to turn black. Explore Ainu Kotan, a small Ainu village in Akankohan. Stroll along the street lined with souvenir shops selling Ainu handicrafts before visiting a small museum that displays traditional Ainu crafts, clothes and daily life utensils. Tonight, watch a traditional Ainu performance. Overnight in Lake Akan region.

Day 6: DAY-6-LAKE-AKAN-LAKE-KUSSHARO-IOZAN-NAKASHIBETSU-NARITA
Set off for Lake Kussharo, the largest caldera lake in Akan National Park. Next, proceed to Mt Iozan or “Sulfur Mountain”, an active volcano with sulfurous vents that can be viewed from a close distance. Take a domestic flight from Nakashibetsu to Narita. Upon arrival, shop at Aeon Plaza, a large mall. Overnight in Narita.

Day 7: DAY-7-NARITA-SINGAPORE
If time permits, you can do some last-minute shopping before you transfer to the airport for your flight home.

· During February to mid-March 2008, experience the exciting ice breaker cruise at Abashiri. Feel the power of
the ship as it forcefully breaks up blocks of ice that are as thick as 1 metre.
