Suzhou Travel Guide

Suzhou Travel Overview:

Dubbed the "Capital of Silk," "World of Gardens," and "Venice of the East," Suzhou is renowned for its profusion of winding slim canals, stunning classical gardens, hearty equisite cuisine and beautiful ladies wearing elegant silk and speaking in a marked soft dislect tone.

An ancient moated water town commanding a privileged position right at the center or within the orbit of a series of imperial courts and boasting the preeminent proximity to the nation's most larger markets and distribution centers in and around the Yangtze River Delta as far as Yuan Dynasty's great capital at Khan-balik, today's Beijing, no wonder Suzhou has emerged as a city of any significance some 2,500 years ago and long been the synonym for the "Land of Abundance."

The ancient cradle of the mellow Wu culture built on a network of interlocking canals whose waters have supported the livelihood of many of the most outstanding talents, best-preserved historic remnants and most illustrious cultural heritages in China, if not in the world, Suzhou carved out a special chapter of history of its own.

Either historically recounted in local chronicles, admirably repoted in Marco Polo's lines of documentary, rhetorically eulogized in traditional sayings that goes "In heaven there is paradise; on earth there are Suzhou and Hangzhou," poetically chanted in such ballads as "on arriving in suzhou you behold: houses are all pillowed on water's edge," melancholy retrospected in lyrics of Zhang Ji's Night-Mooring Near Maple Bridge, dreamily painted or architecturally epitomized in varied forms of artistic verisimilitudes of naturalistic landscaping, or briefly yet boldly highlighted in UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage sites, Suzhou always appears to be an incredibly romantic place to spend a couple of leisure days' stay with a touch of lingering glamour, or a lifetime of laid-back living in an intriguing sort of way.

While as much as you wishfully picture this lovely and neatly landscaped city to be out of such voluminous loads of literature and artistic pieces of work, Suzhou still receives an overspill of cars and crowds like every other fast-growing cities in the country, not to mention the fact that the rate of its economical growth and urban land expansion in the past few years has ranked among the highest in a row in the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone and in China.

A fusion of natural scenery, landscaped beauty and humanistic places of interests, plus a whole lot of hidden gems and lot of going for it that's easy enough to find for anyone who really tries, Suzhou rolls out the welcome mat for guests from home and abroad.
