Kyoto Travel Overview:
Having nurtured the nation's artistic and cultural scene second-to-none in the mid-western Kansai district on the island of Honshu, and built upon the rich arthitectural assets and artistic legacies all the electric paradigm excitement of a vibrant metropolis, Kyoto, a gracious ancient city once the capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years before the Meiji Restoration in 1868, is a veritable treasure house of Japanese culture and tradition.
Boasting 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 shinto shrines, scores of zen gardens, memorials and museums, and a trio of imperial palaces, the Honganji Temples, the Golden Pavilion, and the Katsura Rikyu imperial villa among others, accounting for 20% of Japan's national treasures, 17 of which have been acknowledged as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, Kyoto rightfully takes its place among Athens, Istanbul, Jerusalem, and Rome as a historically significant city that's a living museum in itself.
Genteel silhouette of shrines, temples and palaces and idyllic surroundings of landscaped gardens and natural scenery bringing out the best in each other, kimono and geta clad geisha and maiko gracefuly dancing to the performace of elegant Noh, briefcase-totting commuters scuffling for seat, space and speed during rush hours in the innovative Kyoto Station, where the futuristic Kyoto Tower looming in the forefront, and ultra-modern department stores sprinkling in-between the original basic grid pattern in which the city was first laid out, the traditional heart of Japan is contantly creating new traditions.
A place dearest to the majority of the Japanese hearts for whom the very name of the city conjures up instantly the vivid impression of the longevity of the enigmatic and elegant Japanese culture, and a notoriously exclusive enclave whose fragile existence was lucky enough to spare the bombardment in World War II, yet inevitably susceptible to the overwhelming power of fire, earthquake, as well as the modernization, just like any other Japanese town, no wonder it is said that it is impossible to see, sense and savor the real Japan without seeing, sensing and savoring Kyoto.

Thanks to its selective geographical location in the mid-western Kansai region on the island of Honshu thatĄ¯s surrounded by rolling mountains on three sides, making it near enough to receive pleasing solace from the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, yet far enough to effectively shield off natural catastrophes chronically affllict the coastal cities, Kyoto enjoys a relatively mild climate.
With comfortable weather conditions and fascinating natural sceneries keenly reflecting the changes of the seasons, Kyoto is has four distinct beautiful seasons, with the extravagaza of cherry blossoms and festivals kicking off a fragrant spring, the cool respite of riverside and mountainside greenery easing off the stifling summer weather, a pleasant autumn culnimated in a crimson stain of fall foliage, and a languid winter animated by the gaiety of snowflakes and specail events.
To make the most of your experience in the beautiful Kyoto, you should first of all prepare appropriate clothing for the season you choose to visit.
Light and loose clothing, like short-sleeve T-shirts and shorts, would be most comfortable for for summertime, especially the hot and sticky midd-summer night. Be aware of the continuous visits of rains during June to July and the sudden temperature change between the air-conditioned indoors and the broiling outdoors.
You may also get by with shorts and short-sleeves at the beginning of the mild autumn. Jeans, plus long-sleeve T-shirts, sweatshirt or hooded jumper, will for most of the daytime during the season, while sweaters and light coats or jackets are more advisable for the early and later parts of the day after the autumnal equinox.
Warm overcoats, hats and gloves are the norm while going out in the cold winter. For a break from the coldness while travling around, stop by any air-conditioned public facilities, such office buildings, department stores, museums, hotels, restaurants and so on.
Spring rolls around and temperatures and humidities gradually grow. Make sure you have something you can put on in the cool evenings and shed in the warm afternoons, like light jackets and sweaters, etc.
