Koh Lanta Travel Overview:
A small and charming archipelago of more than 52 islands bathing in Andaman Sea off the shoreline of southwest coast of Thailand, Koh Lanta s the very kind of tropical getaway destination with a perennial bucket-and-spade appeal.
There are ten smooth beaches stretching along the west coast of Koh Lanta Yai, the primary tourist island of the group, most of which shaded with lush vegetation, dotted by bamboo huts and thatched bungalows, lapped by calm aquamarine waters and rimmed by grand coral gardens, making a healthy vacation and easy escape easily realizable for holidaying families, honeymooning newly-weds, thrill-seeking divers, and getting-away retirees.
With the rest of the archipelago, including the other wild and uninhabited islets, and the mangroves, rain forests and intertidal mudflats on Koh Lanta Yai, protected by Koh Lanta Marine National Park, Koh Lanta brings to the fore the balance between low-key development and nature conservancy.
Compared with the tourist magnets of Phi Phi Island, Phuket and Koh Samui, where you are more than likely greeted by touts and louts on the packed out beaches and gouged by the overpriced accommodations, Koh Lanta highlights a more laid-back local lifestyle practically unaffected by the mass tourism, and a less hectic pace where watching the stunning sunsets and strolling along the beaches set the tone.

When it comes to proper clothing on the island, light and loose clothes made of natural fabrics are more sensible for a trip to Koh Lanta which is typical of a tropical nature at its best.
Casual holiday attire, especially those geared to beach areas such as sleeveless shirts, bermuda shorts, open backed sandals, seem to be the typical dress code of tourists on the island.
But swim suits are considered inappropriate when you¡¯re not actually at the beach side or by the pool in a resort area.
Needless to say, you¡¯d better wear sunscreen at all times during the day and mosquito repellent at night.
Sunglasses or a hat also come in useful for extra sunshield, as well as for a protection from the red dust.
If you¡¯re into snorkeling in the sea, spelunking into the caves,or trekking in the jungles, you properly want to bring a pair of sturdy shoes and the set of snorkeling device of your own, although they can be obtained locally.

1.When to go
Climate of Koh Lanta is typically of tropical monsoon type which consits mainly of only two seasons: the wet season from from May to October, and the dry season from November to April.
During the low season of May throuth October when the wet moonsson winds bring in heavy rain drenching the islands and the high tides washing right up to the front of the resorts, much of Koh Lanta shuts down. Only a few resorts remain open during this time
The dry season is the best time to visit, when moonsoon winds cease their massive movement, the sunshine and breezes are basically constant, and all businesses and action come back to life again.
2.Health
Koh Lanta is hot! Take heed of the horrendous heat waves and take good care of yourselves!
Less informed first-timers should always wear suncream or a hat all the time during the day on Koh Lanta, and wear sandals down to the water¡¯s edge in the midday sun. Otherwise you¡¯ll sunburnt to a crisp!
And don¡¯t forget to drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration!
Scuba diving and snorkeling seem to be everyone¡¯s must-do activities on the island.
But there are known health risks associated with such healthy sports, especially if you¡¯re suffering from certain respiratory or circulatory conditions. There are also slightly different health requirements depending on which level of diving you¡¯re participating in.
If you do suffer from any of the conditions inquired, consult a doctor or professional diver for recommendations on healthy diving.
For other prophylactic measures against certain epidemic diseases, especially mosquito-transmitted infection of malaria, dengue fever,or Japanese B encephalitis, consult your physician or local hospital.
Although Koh Lanta is a less susceptible areas for such diseases, using mosquito repellents, sleeping under a mosquito net and wearing lightweight long trousers and long-sleeved shirts are recommended to prevent mossquito bites, just to be on the safe side.
Besides, animal bites, stings or scratches are advised to be cleaned immediately and thoroughly with soap alcohol or iodine solution
3.Safety
While not unknown, incidences of violent crime of foreign tourists are very rare on Koh Lanta, as it is in the rest of the country.
If you use common sense, follow the common travel advices and check the safety of any suspect places, ou¡¯re heading to, you¡¯re most likely to be much safer on the island than you would be in your home country.
As always in any other touristy destinations in Thailand, violent crime is not really a concern on Koh Lanta, but you should keep an eye out for petty crime like pickpockets and gem scams, etc.
Scuba diving doesn¡¯t get much better or much safer anywhere in the world than on Koh Lanta. But it is always worth checking to see if you¡¯re diving without violating any restrictions, your travel insurance includes cover for your underwater activities, or your instructor are competent enough to handle all the specialized assistance to you in the event of a diving emergency.
4.Culture
95% of Koh Lanta's population are muslims.
Although consuming alcohol, topless sunbathing and not wearing the headscarf are against their culture, Koh Lanta seems to be more lax than in mianland rural areas but more strict than Phi Phi Island and Phuket on such restrictions. Which means that they are torlerated but not welcomed on Koh Lanta.
If you don¡¯t want to earn unwanted attention, you should also refrain from shouting or displaying your anger, point at other people or objects with your feet, or touch Thai people's heads in public.
