Jeju Travel Overview:
Although surrounded by the aquamarine waters on all sides since time immemorial and shrouded in heavenly clouds all the year round, Jeju Island, the largest island in South Korea and the scenic and mystical "Island of the Spirits," has long been known as the one of the premier getaway spots, holiday destinations and honemoon paradises in East Asia.
A sancturary of heavenly calm and surreal landscapes driftng on the Southwest Sea of the Korean Peninsula, 64km well south of the western side of the Land of Morning Calm, 490km east of the Oriental Pearl of Shanghai City, 1030km northeast of the capital of the beautiful land of Formosa, and 1580km west of the capital of the Empire of the Sun, Jujus Island is the closest thing to the legend of Horai this part of the world has ever had.
In the sense that this 73 km by 31 km enclave of volcanic island manages to wrap into one compact package spectacles of both the wired vibrancy of city and the wild beauty of nature despite the relative seclusion from the rest of the world, Jeju is to Seoul what Niagara Falls to New York, where natural wonders, like the Jongbang, Cheonjiyeon and Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls in the South Korean case, come at its most accessible and breathtaking, the purpose-built infrastructure, like themed museums and folk villages, parks and gardens, performances and exhibitions, hotels and restaurants are widely spread, and swift and convenient transfers back to the neon-lit hustle and bustle of a world you're familiar with are readily available.
Adding the dominant topographical features of the 1950-meter Mount Hallasan and the peculiar rock formations along the seashores, a strong cultural tint indicative of the mysterious and unique fusion of Pacific-Asian style, and a mild oceanic climate similar to that of Hawaii that's supportive of limited possibilities for leisure recreation and water-sports, including boting, golfing, hiking, horse-back riding, scuba-diving, swimming, windsurfing, etc, the South Korean version has somehow managed to enrich the monotony of its North American counterpart, which is also acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site in June 2007.

1.Geographical Features
Coordinates: 33.22'N, 126.32'E;
Orientation: Lying 145km(91mile) south from Mokpo and 268km(168mile) south from Busan on Korean mainland, and facing Shanghai across the East China Sea to its west, and Japan's Tsushima and Janggi prefectures across the South Sea to its east, Jeju is equidistant from South Korea, China, and Japan, which is right in the center of Northeast Asia.
Topography: Being of volcanic origin, Jeju is dominated by the dormant volcano Mt. Halla (1950 m) in the center of the island, with gentle slopes to east and west and steep slopes to north & south, and 368 Oreum (secondary craters) formed from the top of the Mt. Halla to the coastline. 55% of the island is the coastal area (under 200m above the sea level) used for residential housing, livestock, fish or fruit faming, 27.9% of Jejudo is the mid-mountain area (200~500m above the sea level) used for catter ranching and resort industry, 12.3% of the total area (500~1000m above the sea level) is used for forestry and mushroom farming, and the rest of the 4.5% of the island (over 1,000m above the sea level) is preserved as Halla Mountain National Park.
2.Meteorological Features
Climate pattern: subtropical oceanic climate;
Average annual temperature: 15.2-16.2 Celsius Dgrees;
Average annual humidity: 70.7-76.5%;
Average annual precipitation: 1,094-1,850mm;
Average annual wind speed: 3.1-6.9 m/s;
Average duration of sunshine: 1,900-2,148 hours;
Four Distinct Seasons: hot rainy summer, short mild winter, warm beautiful spring and autumn;
Summary: Jeju is South Korea's warmest and wettest place with the smallest annual and daily temperature range.
3.What to wear
Mind the wind:
Although supposedly warmer and wetter than the mainland South Korea, Jeju can get actually cooler or chillier than you have expected, which has something to do with its strong winds.
Among the famous three things Jeju has in abundance, the wind tops the list, and for good reasons. Wind comes more frequent on the island and wind velocity gets 1-2 m/s stronger than on the continent, which is a blessing if it appears to be a balmy ocean breeze gently caressing the sun-baked faces and backs.
But if you just happen to be here other than the sweltering summer, make sure you have something warm to wear.
A wind-proof jacket would come in handy any time of the year, since the winds are constantly strong and frequently changing.
When the strong winds really chill you to your marrows during winter, you'd regret that you decided to have the heavy coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, thermal underwear of yours tucked away in the wardrobe.
Lip balm, skin moisturiser that contains UV screen, and a thermo flask of warm water would be of great help to combat the chills and meliorate the conditions.
Mind the rock:
Rocks are another thing that are plentiful in Jeju.
There are mysterious and majestic rock formations all over the island.
Being of a volcanic island formed eons ago by volcanic eruptions, Jeju is essentailly rocky.
That said, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is imperative wherever you go on Jeju Island.
And if you wear particularly large size shoes, you should definetly pack an few extra pairs.
Mind the sun:
Due to the topographical effect of Mt. Halla, Jeju often gets under the influence of clouds and fog. But the solar altitude of Jeju is very high all year round, which means that there is a surplus of solar radiant energy and higher risks of getting sunburn on the island.
So arm yourself with long sleeve shirt and pants, good-quality sun block cream, and preferably plus a hat with a broad brim or visor, if you're coming town any time during the beach season from May to October.
Mind the rain:
Half of the summertime in Jeju can be rainy, expecially on the windward slope of the mountains on the southern part of the island.
You'd better prepare yourself with a set of rain gear or water-proof clothing, or extra suits of clothes made from light natural materials that are easy to wash and dry quickly.
Mind the occasion:
Although there is practically no industry in Jeju other than tourism, and the normal casual tourist gear would suffice for the purposes of any leisure recration or active sports, Jeju is getting a higher international profile and is intended to reinvent itself into an International Free City by hosing more and more foreign tourists, international investors and overseas conventioneers every year.
If you're invited to an academic seminar, corporate convention, professional conference, or business meeting, the invitation letter would clearly state the appropriate clothes required in such occasion, most likely of the very formal kind.

2.Health and Safety
Stay Healthy:
No proof of any vaccination is required to enter South Korea;
Vaccination against cholera, HA, typhoid, diphtheria, tetanus and yellow fever is recommended;
Hygienic standards are respectable and medical facilities are top-notch throughout the island;
Bottled water, pasteurize milk, peeled fruit, and boiled vegetables, however, are recommended;
Protection against insect bites, intense ultraviolet radiation and nipping strong winds is needed;
A comprehensive travel insurance that covers health care terms is advised.
Stay Safe:
Jeju has the lowest crime rate in South Korea, which is a remarkably safe country already;
Violent crime is almost non-existent and crime rates against foreigners is reassuringly low;
Just exercise your common sense and take general precautions, and you¡¯ll be just fine in Jeju;
Keep your original travel documents in the hotel safe and carry copies with you at all times.
3.Other Tips
Carry more cash in rural areas on the island, since credit cards are only accepted in few cities;
Learning some basic daily Korean phrases will get you really far while travaling around;
Native Jeju islanders speak a dialect almost unintelligible from standard Korean, so have important names, addresses and contact numbers written down on a small card or something like that will be of great help should you have any emergency somewhere off the beaten track on the island.
