Jakarta Travel Overview:
A jarring jumble of smogs, sights, sounds and sensations on the surface yet a dramatic juxtaposition of such a messy chaos and the miraculous harmony in essence, the bustling Jakarta buzzes with palpable energy and hidden mystery.
The "Victorious City," as the Indonesians named their proud capital for when the shackles of colonialism were finally thrown off, is sitting on the northwestern coast of Java Island at the mouth of the Ciliwung River, facing the Jakarta Bay of the Java Sea on the Pacific Ocean side of the island and commanding the central status in the administrative, cultural, and social life of the 18,000-island archipelago as well as the sophisticated land, air, and sea transport system to get the the rest of of the country and beyond.
The "Big Durian", as most of the expats in Jakarta call it, drips with an inescapably pungent scent, the most exotic savour ever to blast your taste buds, yet the utterly versatile culinary, nutritional and medicinal virtues.
Heaven or hell, Jakarta is a hybrid kind of place with Bangkok's hectic hives of human and traffic, Kuala Lumpur's veritable glut of diversity and extremeties, Mexica City's physical size and population density, yet a spirit of its own
Like it or loathe it, you might find yourself linger in Indonesia's nondescript capital, conducting your own mega business with the surprisingly moneyed Indonesian elite, carrying out your humanistic survey on how appalling on earth the division between the poor and rich could be, discovering the colonial swank at the old Dutch enclave of Batavia, visiting some of the finest cultural attractions in the country such as the National Musuem, Maritime Museum and the Wayang Museum, shopping till you drop at such superb designer shopping centers as the Plaza Indonesia, dancing till the wee hours at some of country's hippest nightspots or gawking at the seemingly perpetual gridlock and cloud of smog, while at the same time knowing that no matter how hard you try to research or refrain, you would still fail to figure out exactly where the road has brought you and what brought you here in the first place.
Absurd, but intensely alive. Dynamic, if sometimes disorderly. Unpredictable, yet definetely unique. Jakarta justly befits the national motto "Unity in Diversity."

1.Go Casual
Like the rest of the archipelago, Jakarta's year-round hot and humid conditions has been classified as of the equatorial/tropical category. There is very little seasonal chances, except the comparatively categoried dry season (April to October) and wet season (November to March). Variations throughout the day are minimal as well.
Light casual clothes, preferably made of cotton or silk, can be counted on as the most comfortable attire to wear any time of the year in this warm climate zone where the mercury column remains exactly the same in January and July at about 28 degrees Celsius
2.Expect Occasional Rains
If it's not scorching in the intense tropical sun in Jakarta, then it's sticky in the torrential monsoonal downpours.
When the eastern monsoon arrives during the wet season, afternoon showers become a daily occurrence, and average monthly rainfall during the peak period in January can reach up to 350mm.
Even during dry season, one can expect occasional rains, as it's attested by such scientific statistics that Jakarta's dry season low point in August still receives a monthly average of 60mm.
As some areas here are actually below sea level and therefore subject to frequent flooding after a heavy rain. Unless you're prepared to travel around in galoshes, be sure to bring a folding umbrella. A light waterproof jacket would also be nice.
3.Be Sun-Smart
Remember that Jakarta's geographical position is almost exactly on the equator, which means that solar altitude is very high all year round and you will become the a vertical target of the UV radiation around March and September when the sun's position is right above your head.
That said, sunscreen with high SPF, sun glasses plus a hat are actually imperative items on your packing list.
4.Blend in with the Locals
You might have been planning on doing lots of walking, sightseeing and shopping during your stay in Indonesia's capital, for which flip flops, beach sandals, and shorts are quite okay.
But if you'd like to adapt to the environment, to blend in with the locals and make things work to your advantage in this predominantly Muslim society, tone it down and take on a un-touristy look, which means that you're advised to wear long pants, instead of shorts, short/long sleeve shirts instead of sleeveless shirts, dresses and blouses instead of short skirts etc.
5. For Business & Special Occasions
For the businessman, a jacket and tie are required for most business meetings. For more formal occasions, safari suits may be needed.
For ladies, dresses, blouses, and long pants are okay for official calls or for more formal occasions.
Long sleeved batik or handwoven shirts, eveningwear accompanied by moderate make up and perfume are appropriate to be worn during such special occasions as cocktail parties and other evening functions.
Mind those occasions when Muslim customs, especially those concerning what to wear for females, are observed.
