Fuzhou Travel Guide

Fuzhou Travel Overview:

Boasting a fantastic geophraphical location which has facilitated its cultural and economic influences to radiate as far interior as Dadu (then the Mongols capital of the Yuan Dynasty, present-day Beijing) and as far abroad as countries of Southeast Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa, Fuzhou is by no means a mundane place to stopover as it appears to be.

Despite its laid-back folklife and seemingly low profile among other Chinese boomtowns, Fuzhou is in fact historically a long-standing cultural, economic and educational hub in Southeast China, currently the capital, largest and most significant city of Fujian Province in China, and essentially a fine seaport at the estuary of the mighty Min River lying right across the strait from Taiwan and almost halway between Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Native to eminent historical figures over the generations who made the history, from the greatest ocean-going adventurers of the ancient world to the most fearless trail-blazing patriots and revolutionists when the future of the nation was put in jeopardy to the most entrepreneurial souls in modern days, and numerous banyan trees throughout the cityscape, many of which are part of the legacy left by a viceroy of the North Song Dynasty during 1064 and 1067, and 6 of them have sprouted in the last 1,000 years or so, Fuzhou is the tried and true "Land of Good Fortune" as its name originally means, and the City of Banyan as its citizens affectionately refer their hometown to.

From the giant ancient banyan trees of twisted beauty to delicate soupy stew of fotiaoqiang and braised sea clam with chicken soup, from the precious shoushan stone carvings of rare collectable value to wondrous water of Fuzhou hot springs with various therapeutic effects, from the old tall tales of tall ships by the old salts to the tangible evidences and traces of a one-time major gateway on the Marine Silk Road, a port of call for Marco Polo's oriental exploration, and an economic powerhouse in China's southeastern coast from the Tang Dynasty through to this day, Fuzhou still has too many more things to enjoy and explore to sum up exhaustively in a tiny little piece of article or to soak up all together within a one day's trip or two.
