Chongqing Travel Overview:
Hazily overcast, heavily industrialized, and haphazardly sprawled, Chongqing has been socioeconomically important enough to become China's fourth municipality directly under the Central Governmentafter Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin in 1997, making the world's largest metropolitan area ever since then kind of a conbination of the smog and sprawl of LA, the hilliness and hotness of SF, and the seediness and sophistication of NYC.
Having endured the substantial brunt and bombardment of invasion by hostile natural powers as well as outside forces since its founding 3,000 years ago, and just about to embrace the possible benefits and blessings of inundation by the world's largest dam that has been displacing over 1.3 million people, this cliff-side Mountain City of 82,400 sq kilometers with a population of 30 million is extra favorably endowed with a legendary Ba-Shu culture dating back to the prehistoric floods and mega-potential to embark on a new mellenium rollercoaster, taking the rest of Southwest China with it.
Many come just for one and only one reason, to catch a Yangtze River cruise downstream to explore the stunning historical and scenic spots along its bank, most notably the Three Gorges with breathtaking scenery and the magnificent Three Gorges Dam Project.
Seasoned with the mysterious Dazu Buddhist rock carvings, the hot and spicy Sichuan delicacies, the vibrant and happening nightlife, cheap traditional shopping, several renowned revolutionary era sites, and most importantly, the hot-tempered and fun-loving Chongqingnese, Chongqing is always an experience catering to each one of your senses.

The Fog City , Mountain City, and one of China's Three Furnaces, Chongqing's nickname says it all.
When the humid subtropical monsoon meets the basin topography in Yangtze River Valley, Chongqing seems to be trapped by heat and/or humidity.
With an early spring with unstable temperatures in the morning and a night rain or two towards the end of the season, a hot and humid summer when the extreme temperature can reach as high as 43.8C, a cool and rainy autumn, from the end of which to early spring the infamous Chongqing fogs would dominate, and a warm and foggy winter with little snow.
Due to the generally unpredictable climatic changes and occasionally unbearable weather extremes, no one would be well prepared enough when it comes to what to pack and wear in Chongqing.
Most tourists arrive during the long sultry summer, when something cool and thin is needed. Leave most of your long pants and jakets at home, they're way too hot for ChonqqingĦŻs summer.
Raingear is quite essential for a Chongqing trip. But you won't survive in raincoats! Use disposable ones, or buy an umbrella here. They are quite cheap in Chongqing.
Due to the absence of the household central heating, and the fact that temperatures can drop well below the freezing point in January, it feels as cold as Beijing during winter in Chongqing. Try on a down jacket, sweater and jeans and prepare something warm for layer-up.

1.Best time to visit
Summer in Chongqing is extremely hot and autumn is almost rainy all the time, which are not suitable for a pleasant holiday.
The best time to visit Chongqing should be late winter and early spring, when temperatures are climbing and plum blossoms blooming;
2.Health
Do not drink directly from tap. While drinking from thermos bottles, make sure its's freshly boiled. Better buy bottled mineral water, which is widely available in local shops and generally very cheap.
Due to its basin topography in Yangtze River Valley and its dubious reputation as a heavily industrialized city, Chongqing is frequented by fogs, mists, and nightly rains even in the summer months, and pollution levels here are high, which can be unbearable for those suffering from asthma or any other lung disease.
Be extremely cautious when dining locally. Mind the hygienic conditions of the restaurant/stall and the surroundings. Check the recipes of the dishes you order and see if you can tolerate the numbing hot and spicy food. Acturally, not all Sichuan delicacies are spicy. Ask for the cook's recommendations.
3.Safety
Make copies of all your travel documents and take one copy along with you;
Do not answer the door before you identify him/her;
Leave the bulk of money in hotel safe and prepare small changes (eg. RMB5 or10) with you;
When going out or parking your vehicle, double check that the doors and windows are locked;
Always travel in groups and never wander around poor-lit streets or the suburbs too late at night;
Mind pickpockets targeting tourists at crowded tourist destinations &public transport vehicles;
Be extremely careful about the maddening traffic.
4.Culture
Generally, the people of Chongqing are hot-tempered and fine-figured, probably due to hot red pepper, the steep hilly streets and the humid air.
They speak in a loud voice and talk in very straightforward manner that some may consider them somewhat crude, which is a misunderstanding of their enthusiastic, and humourous characteristics.
Specifically speaking, there are about 23 distinct minorities call Chongqing home, almost all of them have religious belives, ritual customs and lifestyles of their own.
To avoid unnecessary conflicts resulted from misunderstanding of different cultures, do show respect to each of the local ethnic cultures.
