Cairns Travel Overview:
As the capital city of Far North Queensland and the premier regional tourist center up in the tropical reaches of Australia's east coast, Cairns is modern and mesmerising all at once, with its sophisticated tourist infrastructure framed by the twin natural spectacles of the sparkling coral sea offshore which is home to the largest coral reef in the world and the spectacualr mountain ranges inland which is canopied with the oldest surviving rainforests on earth.
For many years, the claim to fame of this tropical backpakers dream has been that of a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
Yet the Capital of Australia's Tropics is actually within striking distance of a trio of Australia's phenomenal natural icons, including two UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, as well as the Outback, not to mention the endlessly series of coastal playgrounds, hill resorts, and historical and cultural enclaves awaiting to be explored in Port Douglas, Atherton Tableland, Cape Tribulation and beyond, making Canirns the ultimate base from which to discover the true blue Aussie tropics.
No visit to Cairns would be anywhere near complete without getting wet in one way or another.
Surefire ways to test your sea legs are hopping on a cruise trip out to the Reef for fantastic snorkeling and scuba-diving in the world's largest and most phenomenal underwater playground to marvel at psychedelic marine life, or sailing swimming and sunbathing at the magnificent beaches to the north.
Land-lubbered days can be spent investigating the latest cultral offerings at the Cairns Museum, Cairns Regional Gallery and the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, trying out your luck at the Cairns Reef Casino and giving out your hard-earned extra dollars right away in the Night Markets, or sunworshipping and people-watching by the man-made saltwater lagoon along the Esplanade.

Cairns enjoys a typical tropical climate and the weather is almost always sunny.
There are actually two seasons in Cairns, the Green season of November to April when the monsoonal rains acount for nearly 75 to 90% of the annual rainfall, and the Dry of May to October when mild temperatures, low humidity and cool sea breezes making it a perfect time to carry on all kinds of activities.
Clothing is causal on most occasions, although reasonable dress code is observed in rather fancy restaurants, lusury hotels and classy clubs.
Due to its average of 320 days of sunshine each year, summer attire, like lightweight loose clothing, sandshoes or comfortable walking shoes, is worn year round in Cairns.
A light jacket or something warmer is recommended while you¡¯re out in cooler winter evenings or mountainous terrains.
It is worth preparing for higher heat and humidity than you may be used to, and by all means put on your sunhat, sunglasses and sunblock lotion at all times. And don¡¯t forget your swimwear!
A lightweight raincoat is optional for the Green season. And you may find that you need to take the set of mask/snorkel/flippers of your own with you for scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef.
