Batam Travel Overview:
A virtually captivating tropical island ready to whisk you away from the hectic real world to a heavenly resort niche, and a veritable magic boom town endowed with a seductive free trade zone status, a stupendous economic growth rate of about 30% a year in the past few decades and the surprisingly low-price of everything from high fashion to household groceries to human resources, Batam is a heaven of opportunities.
Better still, being one of the 3,200-island Riau Archipelago that's right within the Malacca Strait international shipping route bridging the Indian and the Pacific Ocean, the closest one to Singapore which is only 40 minutes ferry ride away across the Singapore Strait, Batam is born to be a stopping-off point from one part of the world to another, using either the Changi Airport as a hub to get to the hubbub of the reality, or the HarbourFront Ferry Terminal as a jumping-off point to get away from it all in the lush greenery, lovely beaches and laid-back kampung life of a very affordable accessible tropical paradise in Indonesian waters.
On succeeding in becoming one of the most up-and-coming international trade and industry hubs in Southeast Asia and the fastest growing tourist market in Indonesia only after Bali, Batam has also managed to imprint the kaleidoscopic religious and mysterious elements in its distinct local culture.
With international-standard golf courses and water-sports, well-appointed beach resorts and industrial parks, excellent seafood restautants and shopping complexes, and seething nightlife scene, Batam surely is a full-blown playground rolling out its generous red carpet treatment to cater to every whim of all daytrippers, weekenders, holidaymakers, business travelers and long-stay expatriates with grace and style.

With average temperatures ranging from 25 to 34 degrees Celsius and the average humidity ranging from 73% to 96% and an average rainfall of around 2,600 mm throughout the year, Batam and the surrounding area is considered as tropical and has only two seasons: a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May until October.
It is also recognized that the distinction between the wet and dry season is rather relative. Though not as frequent, it still rains during the driest months between July and September. Tropical sunshine and clear sky alternate with afternoon downpours and monsoonal showers is a more creditable description of the weather conditions in here.
Although its climate pattern is quite similar to that of Singapore, the dress codes in Batam are more relaxed.
To protect yourself from the constant intense sunshine and unexpected rains during the process of sightseeing, outdoor shopping and recreational activities, casual light summer clothing, like short pants, T-shirts, sandals or sneakers, will suffice.
If neatly dressed, such attire can also get you into almost all restaurants and bars in town. Nevertheless, it always pays to check the specific dress codes before arrival.
It is also not entirely uncommon to see some visitors wearing Western-style low-cut jeans with short tops in public.
However, if you are going to attend a business meeting, to visit a public office, or wish to impress the interviewer, men are expected to wear collared shirts and long pants and women are expected to wear blouses, skirts, or long pants.
Given the tropical nature of Batam's climate, coats seem to be the excess baggage. But a lightweight jacket will come in handy when you enter an freezingly air-conditioned shopping mall, fancy restaurant, first-class hotel, or an office building from the steamingly hot outdoors.
You may want to include suntan lotion with high SPF, a broad-brimmed sun hat, an extra pair of sunglasses, plus mosquito repellent with strong DEET in your baggage.
